    ALTIMATE - The World's Smallest Peak Altimeter

    Applications: Hobby Rocketry, Toys

    • HOW IT WORKS: The Altimate-I works by measuring the atmospheric pressure and calculating the altitude from that value. The pressure sensor is a highly accurate piezoresistive sensor with built-in non-linear temperature compensation and 6-coefficient factory calibration parameters. The microcontroller reads the pressure through a 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter and applies the temperature compensation and calibration calculations to determine an extremely accurate atmospheric pressure value. This process is repeated 8 times in a half second and the results averaged for even greater accuracy. The microcontroller then takes that pressure value and, using the NASA Standard Atmospheric Model, calculates the actual altitude to an accuracy of about one foot. This is then subtracted from the ground level altitude to arrive at the altitude Above-Ground-Level (AGL.) The Altimate-I saves the highest altitude AGL and displays it on the LEDs.

    • Reading Out the Peak Altitude:
    • After recovery of the rocket, the LEDs will display the peak altitude attained by the rocket. There are four LEDs, the leftmost one (LED-4) corresponds to 1000s of feet, LED-3 to 100s, LED-2 to 10s, and LED-1 to 1s. The LEDs will each blink the number of times corresponding to the altitude. If over 10,000 feet, the whole row will blink simultaneously corresponding the number of 10,000s of feet. For example, if the rocket attained an altitude of 13,074 feet, the LEDs would show the following:
      • All four LEDs blink once (10,000 ft)
      • LED-4 blinks 3 times ( 3,000 ft)
      • LED-3 doesn't blink (no 100s)
      • LED-2 blinks 7 times ( 70 ft)
      • LED-1 blinks 4 times ( 4 ft)
